A physician that treats patients, not diseases $ere is no need to reject the oslerian paradigm in order to aspire to having, in the future, physicians that can adapt it to the variability of real patients, each with their speci"c individual context, socio-cultural background and speci"c understanding of the world, of themselves and of their illnesses. $e physician, besides treating patients, has to work with patients and be capable of involving patients in the management of their illnesses. $e asymmetry in the patient-doctor relationship is not necessarily by itself negative and can be utilized to the patient’s bene"t since trust generated by the moral and scienti"c authority of the physician is the source of placebo positive e'ects
