2009-The Physician of the Future English and Catalan

F UNDACIÓN E DUCACIÓN M ÉDICA (FEM) 70 2.9. A physician committed to patients and health care organisations In present working conditions, the physician has to deploy intelligent leadership and exert multiple capacities in order to deal successfully with the changing context. Physicians ought to understand that leadership must be exercised with conviction above all in order to be acknowledged by others. Physicians cannot skip responsibilities inherent to teamwork characterising modern complex organisations. Physicians must be committed to high standards, demonstrate a responsible attitude and be willing to collaborate with other health care professionals that should be seen as partners in attaining the desired goals. Furthermore, physicians ought to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the organisation beyond their claims for participation in its governance. Only in this way may physicians be able to maintain their working autonomy and forge positive relations with the organisation’s managers. Certain elements of management are substantial with it and cannot be denied so adequate a#rmative schemes in support of professional autonomy must be worked out. Finally, physicians should understand that giving meaning to their activities is their own responsibility. $e more they play the role of victim the more fragile and defenceless they will become, losing self- esteem and progressively blurring their professional pro"les, thereby weakening the capacity to in&uence others and the ability to demand suitable working conditions.
